Char-Broil Performance 4-Burner Review

Char-Broil’s Performance line of gas grills are the company’s entry-level offerings and range in size from 2 to 6 burners. The Char-Broil Performance 475 4-Burner offers a wide variety of features at a very good price.

Key Features

The 475’s 4 main burners produce 36,000 BTUs, resulting in plenty of heat for both grilling and indirect cooking. Also, the side burner produces 10,000 BTUs and is great for side dishes and keeping things warm.

475 square inches of primary cooking space results in enough cooking space for approximately 20 burgers. The 175 square inch swing-a-way rack also provides plenty of space for warming.

The porcelain-coated cast iron grates provide great heat retention and are also easy to clean. Additionally, the porcelain coating makes them rust resistant.

The electronic ignition system uses a single button which results in easy lighting of the grill.

The porcelain-coated grease tray is removable and hence clean-up is quick and easy

The lid-mounted temperature gauge provides accurate temperature readings and is especially useful when cooking with the lid down.

The warranty is part specific and ranges from 1 to 5 years.

Char-Broil Performance 475 4-Burner Detailed Review

Design and Build Quality

The burners of the 475 are stainless steel and the grill uses a convective cooking system resulting in even heat and reduced flare-ups.

The grill also features stainless steel heat tents which sit above the burners. These shield the burners from juices directly falling into them and causing flare-ups. The heat tents also help distribute heat evenly through the grill.

Char-Broil’s warranty covers the burners for 5 years but only covers the firebox and lid for 2 years. All other parts are only covered for 1 year. Therefore, buyers should align their durability expectations accordingly.

The 10,000 BTU side shelf burner is made from stainless steel and has a fold-down cover allowing the shelf to be used as a work surface when the burner is not in use. The side burner is great for cooking sides and sauces.

The Performance 475 comes with a built-in analog thermometer in the lid but we recommend picking up a good digital thermometer for the best accuracy.

The Char-Broil Performance 475 comes in a cart version only; the back and sides of the cart are exposed.

Ease of Assembly

Assembly of the 475 is relatively straightforward although some people have complained about the instruction being difficult to read, The firebox comes pre-assembled, you simply have to assemble the cart, side burner, and shelves.

Total assembly time is approximately 1-2 hours.

Ease of Use

Matches or other fire-starting systems are not needed for the Performance 475. The electronic ignition system allows for the grill to be lit with a touch of a button,

The built-in thermometer in the lid allows you to monitor the temperature with the lid down.

The grill comes mounted on 2 wheels and 2 legs, making it easy to move around. The Performance 475 weighs 96 pounds.

Quality of the Cook

The porcelain-coated cast-iron grates retain and distribute heat very well, resulting in even temperatures across the grill’s surface.

Ease of Cleanup

The grill grates of the Performance 475 4-Burner are porcelain-coated, thus they are easier to wipe down after use. The grease pan is also porcelain-coated and pulls out, also making for easy cleaning.

The Char-Broil Performance 475 4-Burner offers a ton of features for the price and thus provides excellent value.
